Buzzard het volgende; “”We note the remarkable comment of a celebrated Church Father. It was so difficult for Augustine to harmonize this original Christian creed with the Trinitarian dogma known to him in the fifth century, that this immensely influential church leader actually restructured Jesus’ words to accommodate both Father and Son in the Godhead. Augustine, in his Homilies on John, boldly asserts that John 17:3 means: “This is eternal life that they may know Thee and Jesus Christ, whom Thou has sent, as the only true God. This daring alteration of the Holy Scripture seriously distorts the words given to us by Jesus. Jesus defines his own position as the Messiah, distinct from the Godhead, which consists of the Father alone.” (3)

In the Greek critical Commentary lezen we het volgende; “The Latin Fathers (Aug(230), Amb., Hil(231)), anxious to avoid the inference unwarrantably drawn by some from this verse against the Godhead of Christ, construed: ἵνα γιν. σε κ. ἰ. χ. θεόν,—which is of course inadmissible. Others (Chrys., Euth.), construing rightly, yet regarded Jesus Christ as included in the words μόν. But all such violences to the text are unnecessary”. (4)

De spelling van Johannes 17;3 luidt als volgt;

[1] that they may know Thee,
[2] the only true God,
[3] and Jesus Christ,
[4] whom Thou hast sent.”

Kerkvader Augustinus en andere ‘Latin church Fathers’ maken er het volgende van;

[1=>1] [t]hat they may know Thee
[3=>2] and Jesus Christ,
[4=>3] whom Thou hast sent,
[2=>4] as the only true God.” (5)
